The Environmental Services Department provides comprehensive and innovative utility services for Sunnyvale's residents and businesses and facilitates initiatives to achieve the City's sustainability objectives. The Department brings together technical, operational, and administrative professional disciplines to form its dedicated and dynamic team. This recruitment is to fill a current vacancy in the laboratory, but the eligible list may be used for future vacancies in the laboratory or the Compliance Inspection group. City of Sunnyvale Laboratory/Field Technicians work in the laboratory when assigned to the Laboratory and in the field when assigned to the Compliance Inspection group. In the laboratory, Laboratory/Field Technicians work independently under the supervision of a Senior Environmental Chemist primarily collecting and analyzing samples from Sunnyvale's Water Pollution Control Plant. The laboratory performs a variety of physical, chemical, biological and bacteriological analyses to monitor operations and demonstrate compliance for the City's wastewater, drinking water and industrial pretreatment programs. In the Compliance Inspection group, Laboratory/Field Technicians work under the supervision of the Senior Environmental Compliance Inspector primarily in the field collecting samples from industries, restaurants and the sanitary sewer collection system in order to determine compliance with local and federal discharge limits. The Laboratory/Field Technician in Compliance Inspection works closely with the Environmental Compliance Inspectors to regulate dischargers. This position requires an Associate’s degree or 60 semester units or 90 quarter units in environmental science, including courses in chemistry, biology or other related sciences, two years of experience performing field technician and/or laboratory duties and a valid California class C driver’s license with a safe driving record.
