Transportation and Traffic Manager

Sunnyvale is seeking a highly motivated and dynamic professional to fill the current opening for Transportation and Traffic Manager. The position resides in the Department of Public Works and will be a direct report to the Director of Public Works. Primary responsibilities include managing regional and high profile transportation projects within Sunnyvale. The position will be responsible for coordinating with outside agencies such as the Valley Transportation Authority, Caltrain, High Speed Rail, Caltrans, adjacent cities, MTC, and ABAG.  

Current projects include: Mary Avenue Overcrossing over highways 101 and 237; Bernardo Avenue railroad undercrossing; Sunnyvale Avenue and Mary Avenue railroad grade separations, liaison with the County for the Lawrence Grade Separation project; and coordinating with VTA as part of the proposed transportation ballot measure Envision 2040. The position will manage multiple consultant contracts and will be expected to coordinate and work closely with the Transportation and Traffic Division of Public Works.   

This position will supervise a small team. Other responsibilities of the position which may be added in the future include: managing and directing the Transportation and Traffic Division which includes transportation planning and traffic operations engineering; planning and coordinating division workload and budgets; creating and sustaining cooperative and collaborative working relationships across the City, with the development community, and residents; providing highly complex staff assistance to the Director of Public Works.

The minimum qualifications for education and experience can be met in the following way:

A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering, planning, public administration or a related field and five years of responsible transportation, engineering or planning management experience, including two years of supervisory experience.
