Job Description

The Discovery Technologies Group in SRI International’s Biosciences Division is seeking a Senior Research Engineer with product development experience to drive the development and commercialization of an automated chemical synthesis platform. The engineer will lead efforts associated with refining and expanding the capabilities of the existing platform and coordinate efforts between the development and productization teams to improve manufacturability and user experience. The engineer will work with a broadly experienced team of Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) including chemical engineers, system engineers, chemists, analytical chemists, software engineers, computer scientists, and mechanical technicians. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead design, assembly, and testing efforts and coordinate activities within the engineering design, fabrication, and productization teams for development of hardware and software
  • Provide insight into industry best practices and market needs to drive product vision and execution using an agile implementation methodology
  • Identification and recommendation of improvements for hardware, software, and workflow
  • Coordinate with market researchers and key stakeholders to evaluate market needs, guide development efforts, and create business case
  • Incorporate user research to focus development and productization efforts to achieve the desired UX
  • Develop product roadmaps, generate priorities based on shared vision, and adhere to development schedules
  • Conduct trade studies and analysis

 Qualifications

  • MS in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field plus 5 years of industry experience; or BS in a related field plus 10 years of demonstrated experience
  • Technical program leadership experience including leading design and/or product development teams
  • Basic familiarity with a CAD package and engineering drawings
  • Basic familiarity with a project management tool
  • Solid understanding of underlying engineering and development in hardware and software domains; able to communicate with development teams at a technical level
  • Experience with flow chemistry and fluidic systems preferred
  • Experience with ink jet printing technology preferred
  • Experience in conducting trade studies (alternate technologies, make/buy, cost/performance, and scale/functionality)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment
  • Successful candidate will demonstrate effective leadership ability and strong oral and written communication skills including presentations of technical material and proposal writing
