The Foothill-De Anza Community College District is currently accepting applications for the faculty position of Instructor, Emergency Medical Services, Foothill College.

Under the direction of the Dean, Biological and Health Sciences and the Emergency Medical Services Program Director, the full-time tenure track instructor will assist in the coordination of student recruitment, selection and mentoring of students to the EMS program, and instruction of lecture and laboratory classes in the three aspects of EMS programs viz., Emergency Medical Responder, Emergency Medical Technician, and Paramedics.


Duties and responsibilities include: Participate in the planning, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of EMS educational program offerings. Teach lecture and laboratory classes EMR, EMT, Paramedic, Continuing Education, ACLS, PALS, BLS and PHTLS. Prepare and delivers instruction either on campus or off-site, as needed; supervise the activities of course participants during instructional time. Evaluate learner performance, provides feedback, and develop learner remediation plans. Fulfill EMS educational program administrative requirements, to include calculation and submission of grades, maintenance of program, course, and student/participant records, and preparation and submission of data and reports. Assist in the program accreditation process. Participate in continuing professional development programs as appropriate. Adhere to established College and departmental policies and procedures and relevant quality and safety standards. Work closely with clinical instructors involved in the clinical assignments of students. Evening classes may be part of teaching load. Standard duties expected of all faculty include development and evaluation of curricula, maintaining scheduled office hours, attending department and division meetings, pursuing professional growth activities, service on district and/or college committees, and performing other duties consistent with the role of an instructor

Instructors also have the opportunity to participate in campus extra-curricular activities.




1. Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.


2. Each training program shall have a principal instructor(s), who is responsible for areas including, but not limited to, curriculum development, course coordination, and instruction and shall meet the following criteria:


a. Be a physician, registered nurse, physician assistant, or paramedic, currently certified or licensed in the State of California.


b. Be knowledgeable in the course content of the January 2009 United States Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) National Emergency Medical Services Education Standards DOT HS 811 077 E, herein incorporated by reference; and


c. Have six (6) years of experience in an allied health field and an associate degree or two (2) years of experience in an allied health field and a baccalaureate degree.


3. Be qualified by education and experience with at least forty (40) hours of documented teaching methodology instruction in areas related to methods, materials, and evaluation of instruction.


Preferred Qualifications:


• Prior teaching experience in Paramedic, EMT, EMR didactic and laboratory classes.

• Bachelor's degree.

• Five years of full time experience providing patient care as a 911-first responder (as a paramedic).

• Applies varied teaching strategies to successfully engage, inspire and retain students with diverse backgrounds and learning styles, using principles of instructional design and curriculum development.

• Commitment to professional growth and development and to continued innovation and improvement of teaching.

• Participation in professional EMS organizations.

• Demonstrates proficiency in use of computers and technology in the delivery of in-person and online instruction. Canvas certification is preferred.

• Involvement in collaborating harmoniously with faculty to successfully achieve program goals and objectives.

• American Heart Association BLS, ACLS, PALS & NAEMT PHTLS Instructor Certifications.

In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate:


• Strong communication and teaching skills. (A teaching demonstration will be required as part of the interviewing process.)

• Address stressful events, created by hostile students or patients by (a) maintaining emotional control, (b) listening without judgement or retaliation, (c) reasoning objectively and consistently, (d) keeping at the forefront the best interests of the student or patient, and (e) maintaining professionalism and the due process.

HIRING RANGE: $72,588.00 - $119,214.00 annually plus benefits; actual placement is based on applicant's verified education and experience.
