DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES of the Position Include:

Reporting to the Dean of Physical Sciences, Mathematics, and Engineering (PSME), the Math Success Program Counselor will assist with program implementation of the goals and objectives of the math success programs, including Math Performance Success (MPS) and other AB705 compliant models. These programs provide intensive student support services for underprepared students in mathematics. The candidate will provide counseling and advising services for students. The counselor will collaborate with the Director of the STEM Program and the Dean of PSME, counselors, staff, and also work closely with math faculty in monitoring student course progress and providing intervention to ensure course success. The candidate will assist with student/tutor recruitment and placement, will implement in and out of class counseling and advising services, will work closely with faculty to monitor student progress, distribute course material and assist with reporting on the success of the programs.

 

This position is not a mathematics position but does require experience supporting students in mathematics and related STEM disciplines.

 

Standard duties expected of all faculty include development and evaluation of curricula, maintaining scheduled office hours, attending department and division meetings, pursuing professional growth activities, service on district and/or college committees, and performing other duties consistent with the role of an instructor. Instructors also have the opportunity to participate in campus extra-curricular activities.

• Identifying students experiencing academic difficulties in mathematics.

• Effective student recruitment, placement, and program orientation.

• Working in a closely integrated team of instructors, counselors, tutors, mentors, and other college services.

• Recruiting, scheduling, mentoring, and evaluating student tutors.

• Establishing an effective rapport with students inside and outside of the classroom.

• Developing an education plan for each student in the math programs.

• Closely monitoring student progress through weekly meetings with faculty and staff.

• Establishing and maintaining relationships with other student service groups in program planning and organizing.

• Attending all program and division meetings and training sessions.

• Participating in on-going professional development training.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

• Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.

• Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling OR the equivalent OR a Bachelor's degree in one of the above listed degrees AND a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

• Demonstrated knowledge and skills in providing counseling and career services to multi-ethnic and underrepresented students.

• Demonstrated knowledge and experience in providing academic, personal, career counseling to community college students, especially underprepared students.

• Ability to provide culturally relevant and equity-minded counseling strategies to underprepared and underrepresented students.

• Demonstrated experience in serving students with difficulties in STEM courses.

• Demonstrated experience in working closely and collaboratively with a team.

• Demonstrated strong communication, written, and interpersonal skills.

• Experience with counseling related technology, educational planning software, and social media.

• Experience working in a student success program.

HIRING RANGE: $60,490.00 - $99,345.00 annually plus benefits; actual placement is based on applicant's verified education and experience.
