Job Description


The Inmate Support Services Program Coordinator is responsible for providing contracted services to individuals currently in custody of the Santa Clara County Department of Correction at the following locations: the Main Jail Complex, Elmwood Correctional Complex and Women’s Correctional Facility.


  • Obtain Security Clearance for access to Correctional Facilities

  • Respond to all Tablet / Hardcopy Inmate Requests in a timely manner

  • Interview in-custody clients and family members, as needed to fulfill contractual obligations

  • Provide mandated copy service for inmates designated as Pro Per

  • Provide legitimate legal copy service for inmates who may request

  • Assist with receipt, processing, logging of book packages and/or delivery of books for designated Inmates

  • Receive, respond, and record all phone calls from families and friends of inmates in a timely manner (any direct telephonic communication with Inmate is prohibited)

  • Provide a supply of donated books to housing units on a case by case basis

  • Act as Lay Advocate as necessary

  • Maintain good working relationship with Santa Clara County Department of Correction staff

  • Keep up to date with current trends in the Criminal Justice System

  • Maintain accurate comprehensive records and statistical data

  • Submit monthly statistics and information for contracts in a timely manner

  • Work cooperatively with County and Catholic Charities staff

  • Work effectively with other community groups and organizations

  • Make presentations to other groups and agencies regarding Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County programs as needed

  • Be supportive of Agency fund-raising efforts

  • Participate in Other Catholic Charities programs as appropriate

  • Perform other contract specific duties as may be delegated by the Program Manager

  • Perform occasional duties that may not directly relate to the job description which are relative to Inmate Supportive Services Program

  • Perform Notary Public Services if currently commissioned by CA Secretary of State*



  • Minimum: AA Degree or any combination of education and experience to perform duties and responsibilities of position

  • Experience in the field of criminal justice

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Correction security clearance

  • Obtain a Notary Public Commission from the State of California (preferred but not required)


  • Demonstrate maturity and professionalism

  • Use of discretion in determining client needs

  • Research, investigate and develop possible solutions to Inmate problems and requests

  • Work well in stressful situations

  • Remain objective and non-judgmental

  • Empower and not rescue

  • Do not perform favors for client population

  • Work well with people from diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds

  • Work independently and as a team member

  • Be creative and innovative

  • Keep well written records, reports and statistics

  • Have good written and verbal communication skills

  • Have strong motivation and flexibility

  • Have computer skills or the willingness to develop them

  • Have basic clerical skills


  • Clearance of fingerprint background check via Live Scan

  • Must have TB test performed

  • Provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination and booster(s) status

  • Personal Automobile, Valid CA driver’s license, proof of insurance and good driving record per agency policy (or access to transportation)
