Under the supervision of the Shop Manager, this position operates fabricating machines, tools and equipment such as saws, shears, and brakes, that cut, shape bend and bond plastic plates, sheets, tubes and structures by performing the following duties below. This position may also operate various machine shop equipment including manual Mills and Routers, Vacuum Formers, various saws, cutters, and presses, and other shop equipment and tools.

The Senior Fabricator is an experienced journey-level position. Incumbents are expected to independently perform all the functions of the Senior Fabricator position, and complete assignments of intermediate to advanced complexity. This classification is further distinguished from the Senior Fabricator in that the Fabricator Supervisor does have supervisor responsibility.

Essential Functions

  1. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, work orders, and machining instructions.
  2. Trims, drills, countersinks parts to specifications, using templates, hand tools, and power tools.
  3. Strong knowledge in using shop instruments such as calipers, gage pins, height gauges and micrometers to ensure that the part’s dimensions are correct.
  4. Performs typical machine shop operations to support the production and fabrication of plastic parts.
  5. Detects and reports defective materials or questionable conditions to the production manager.
  6. Maintains the work area and equipment in a clean orderly condition and follows prescribed safety regulations.
  7. Must be able to perform but not limited to the following tasks: milling, turning, drilling, tapping, deburring, forming and all bench operations.
  8. Must be willing to accept and receive supervision and assistance with regard to machine set-up.
  9. Must be able to operate with minimal supervision once trained by following work instructions and Standard Operating Procedures.
  10. Wear proper safety equipment and comply with company safety rules at all times.

Supervisory Responsibility
This position has supervisory responsibilities, including but not limited to directing and overseeing the activities of shop staff, enforcing safety procedures, and ensuring the overall quality of product throughout the manufacturing process.

Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to fumes, vapors, or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The noise level in the work environment can be loud.

Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds or more. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
Days and hours of work depend on part-time or full-time status, but are generally Monday through Friday during business hours of 7:00am-3:30pm.  

No travel is expected for this position. 

Required Education and Experience

  1. High school diploma or GED, or equivalent years of experience.
  2. A minimum of three years of related shop experience as a senior fabricator preferably in a plastic fabrication environment. 
  3. Experience with the properties of common plastics used in fabrication.
  4. Experience with bonding of plastics using appropriate solvents.
  5. Ability to read and interpret blueprints.
  6. Training in general safety awareness and practices.
  7. Working knowledge of using calipers & micrometers.
  8. Ability to read and write English, comprehend and follow verbal and written instructions.
  9. Intermediate shop math.

Preferred Education and Experience

  1. Five or more year of related shop experience.
  2. Experience with 2D/3D CAM/CAD software a plus.
  3. Advanced shop math.
  4. Quality system awareness.
  5. Proficient using a PC in a Windows environment.
  6. Experience overseeing one or more fabricators.
