Position Description: Vocera is seeking a talented and innovative Staff Speech Recognition NLP Engineer to join our team. You will be a key member of the Voice Experience team to

build a state of the art backend for providing voice based natural language interaction to deliver huge value to some the largest hospital care and communications systems. You will have the opportunity to partner closely with a team of passionate machine learning and NLP engineers to design, develop, deploy and maintain advanced semantically aware intelligent system with text and voice recognition capabilities that can understand contextual and non-contextual commands for the healthcare domain. These commands would interpret the context and intent of such utterances and execute the necessary action. You will also be working with a cross functional team to understand Vocera's overall speech system and developing innovative ideas including designing and implementing enhanced speech API's for delivering value added capabilities to Vocera customers.


  • Identifying problems and implementing solutions to enhance our semantic parsing engine using innovative NLP techniques
  • Guiding the team's engineering decisions and improving software development practices with an eye for performance, reliability, and maintainability
  • Learn, develop, and apply new techniques in the intersection of linguistics, math, probability, and optimization
  • Translate unstructured, complex business problems into an abstract mathematical framework, making intelligent approximations when needed to put your algorithm to work at scale
  • Use machine learning techniques to implement new speech capabilities
  • Deploy, maintain and tweak scoring models based on feedback loops and real-time performance
  • Work closely with fellow engineers to incorporate the new capabilities into the system and deliver them in a release
  • Develop prototypes of new capabilities and refine them in an Agile fashion using customer feedback


  • Solid foundation in NLP or ML
  • Proficiency of machine translation and techniques in building semantic parsers and execution engine
  • Familiarity with open source ML/NLP toolkits
  • Well organized with strong attention to detail; proactively ensures work is accurate
  • Positive attitude and work ethic
  • Excellent analytical, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Have a passion for the end-to-end development of quality software products and the desire to make a difference


  • MS or PhD in CS or related disciplines or equivalent
  • 12+ years experience implementing scalable natural language processing engines (with a special focus on semantic understanding and knowledge modeling)
  • Expert proficiency and understanding of the Agile software development lifecycle
  • Strong proficiency in Java, Scala, or Python
  • Understanding of speech application development environment using object oriented techniques
  • Travel required up to 10%, domestic and international
