JOB DESCRIPTION
BUS DRIVER INSTRUCTOR
BASIC FUNCTIONS
Under direction, conducts bus driver training and safety training programs, dispatches buses, documents and records school bus accidents, maintains required California Highway Patrol (CHP) records, assesses driving skills and knowledge of bus drivers, and drives a school bus when required.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Plans, organizes and implements regularly scheduled school bus driver training programs for original bus drivers and renewal bus drivers, which includes classroom, behind the wheel training, and proficiencies.
Monitors and assesses driving performance of school bus drivers, provides specific suggestions to correct deficiencies in the operation of a school bus, and prepares written report on all driving assessments.
Maintains all required CHP/transportation records including, but not limited to: driver records, driver’s authorized vehicles, daily vehicle inspection reports, driver’s training hours and on-duty hours, accident reports, school bus evacuation reports, 13 CCR 2480 compliance, etc.
Maintains current school bus identification/CHP inspection schedules.
Establishes and maintains an effective working relationship with CHP, including conferring on potentially dangerous situations on school bus routes or on school bus drivers’ road performance, and disseminating new information regarding laws affecting school bus transportation.
Prepares oral and written reports including material of confidential nature and accurately submits, maintains and/or presents them.
Responds to school bus accidents as needed. Prepares reports and provides necessary information to Business Services regarding all vehicle accidents. Conducts post-accident retraining as directed.
Reviews and updates as necessary the District Transportation Safety Plan and other related publications.
Assists in the determination of schedules.
Assists with the interpretation of transportation requests and duties assignments and establishes/adjusts work procedures to meet schedules and route time requirements.
Confers with school authorities on pupil management issues and trains school bus drivers in the appropriate techniques.
Assists in the evaluation of District designated school bus stops; adds/makes changes to school bus stops as required by state law or as necessary for student safety.
Maintains current information on state laws as related to school bus driving; attends related conferences and trainings as required.
Conduct school bus driver safety programs.
Plans and coordinates school bus evacuation drills for students and ensures that the evacuation drills are in accordance with Federal and state requirements.
Dispatches buses, schedules coverage, and drives as needed.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Demonstrated experience and training to insure successful performance and a minimum of five (5) years of bus driving experience.
A driving record with no chargeable violations within the past three (3) years.
Ability to train and evaluate the driving of school bus drivers.
Ability to conduct studies, prepare reports, and plan and implement lessons.
Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
Operates a school bus as required in a safe and effective manner.
Ability to pass the District physical examination and maintain physical standards to perform job requirements.
Possess and maintain a Standard Red Cross First Aid Certificate.
Possess and maintain a valid California Commercial Motor Vehicle Class A or B with air brake endorsement.
Possess and maintain a School Bus Drivers Certificate (unrestricted).
Possess and maintain a Bus Driver Instructor Certificate issued by the State of California, Department of Education.
