Job Description

We are looking for an executive director to lead Acterra in its efforts to combat climate change.  The executive director will manage a budget of about $1 million, report to a 16-member board of directors, oversee a staff of ten, including four direct reports, and ensure outstanding educational and engaging experiences for our members.  The ideal candidate has a passion for, and knowledge of, environmental sustainability, a successful history of people management, deep connections within the climate solutions community, and experience in the nonprofit sector. And most of all, Acterra seeks a leader who can support, inspire, and direct our fabulous staff.



  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Ten years of related work experience, including five years of management level experience in a nonprofit organization
  • Master’s degree and/or other graduate degree is preferred.
  • Personal and/or professional experience that indicates a commitment to Acterra’s mission
  • A track record of manifesting positive relationships and partnerships with external stakeholder groups, including cities and counties
  • Excellent communication skills, including writing, editing and public speaking
  • Experience working with a board of directors
  • Comfort and skill in raising funds from individuals and institutions
  • Proven skills in strategic planning, budgeting, finance, operations, and human resources management
  • Some proficiency with social media


Vision, Strategy and Planning

  • Strengthen Acterra’s ability to provide local solutions to climate change
  • Provide inspirational leadership to engage and motivate Acterra’s key stakeholders
  • Work with individuals, community groups, local businesses, governments and agencies to help them adopt best practices for becoming more sustainable and to reduce their climate impacts
  • Oversee the implementation of the organization’s current strategic plan and work with board and staff in future strategic planning efforts

Financial and Organizational Leadership

  • Develop and support a cohesive, collaborative and effective senior management team
  • Develop, review and revise human resources and staff management practices that support a high performing, team-based culture with good opportunities for professional development
  • Work closely with the board of directors and its committees to ensure strong and appropriate fiduciary oversight, governance and engagement
  • Ensure that Acterra operates in a financially sustainable manner
  • Implement and maintain systems that support effective, transparent financial management, including budgeting and reporting

Programmatic Impact

  • Oversee Acterra’s current programs and ensure their continued health and growth
  • Together with board and staff, identify opportunities for increased reach and impact through the development of new programs, with a particular focus on climate change solutions
  • Expand Acterra’s audience through information technologies such as social media and webinars
  • Oversee production of the annual report

Revenue Generation

  • Work closely with the board and development staff in major donor fundraising efforts including cultivation of major donors
  • Work with board and development staff to maximize contributed revenue from all sources, including foundations, government agencies, individuals and corporations

Preferred but not Required

  • Familiarity with, and contacts in, the business, public and/or nonprofit sectors of Silicon Valley
  •  Prior leadership experience in an environmental organization
  • Familiarity with nonprofit communications and marketing
  • Familiarity with the Bay Area, its donors and its high tech culture
  • Experience developing and successfully implementing innovative environmental programs
