Knowable Magazine, an award-winning online publication dedicated to exploring science research through a journalistic lens, is seeking a Web Producer/Science Reporter to research, write, produce, publish and help promote our content. The full-time position will be based in our Palo Alto, Calif., office. Specific responsibilities include: Close collaboration with Knowable Magazine’s small staff of editors and art director to handle: Website production and coordination: Produce magazine content for publication, including proofreading text, formatting, captions, credits, link and meta-data for accuracy and style. Review headlines and URLs for SEO. Keep homepage content fresh and attractive. Coordinate with the web development team in our IT department to troubleshoot issues, develop new pages and functions, and manage the roll-out and testing of new updates. Manage YouTube and SoundCloud accounts. Create and update XML files and publish on website via a content management system. Assist with newsletter production as needed. Approx. 20% of time. Reporting and writing: Using news judgement and a solid understanding of science, the digital producer will identify, report and write briefs, short articles and Q&As for the magazine on the broad array of scientific and scholarly topics covered in the Annual Reviews journals (2 to 3 items per month). In addition, identify and write brief items for the weekly Knowable newsletter (2 to 3 per week). Approx. 40% of time. Social media content creation: Plan, research and write posts for Facebook, Twitter, Reddit and other social platforms, producing multiple posts per day. Posts will include a mix of Knowable article promotion, original content and curation of science coverage by other outlets. Coordinate with Knowable staff and freelance writers to ensure regular flow of content. Approx. 20% of time. Multimedia content: Identify, acquire and edit existing video footage from various sources. In some cases, write, produce and/or edit short video segments to complement text articles and to help visualize complex scientific concepts (approximately 6 to 8 per year). Coordinate with independent contractors on larger video, audio or other multimedia projects (2 to 6 projects per year). Approx. 20% of time Administrative & Ad Hoc tasks: Assist with fact checking, photo research and other duties as assigned and as needed. Qualified candidates must have: A graduate degree in science or science communication + at least 2 years of science journalism experience or a BA/BS in science or journalism + 3-5 years journalism experience covering science or biomedicine and writing on deadline. Strong technical skills including: MS Word – Advanced Advanced HTML and experience working with CMS systems Adobe Photoshop to crop and resize pictures Proficiency with Adobe Premiere Pro video editing software Proficiency with Adobe Audition or other audio editing software Familiarity with Hootsuite or other social media programs Excellent verbal, written & interpersonal communication skills Strong news judgment and eye for compelling stories that would be of broad interest Knowledge of science issues and research practice Strong video and audio editing and production skills A strong work ethic, professional demeanor and ability to communicate effectively with academics Ability to read and understand technical scientific articles and figures Ability to report and write clear and compelling articles on tight deadlines Ability to respond positively to edits and other feedback Experience with and familiarity with social media practices, sound judgment about use of appropriate tone and voice on social media, and how to respond to negative comments Knowledge of best practices of SEO Strong interviewing skills and organizational skills Positive, can-do attitude & ability to work effectively in a team environment Ability to analyze situations effectively, prioritize tasks, work independently, and self-manage Ability to travel up to 5% of time Passion for science and technology is essential Specific vision abilities include close vision, ability to adjust focus and color vision in order to perform fact checking to ensure that the colors on graphs, maps and photos match legends or captions.
